Walker & Hall Silver Plate Marks

Walker & Hall Silver Plate MarksHere you will see an example of some silver plate marks for the company Walker and Hall. They are not to be confused with Silver Hallmarks as they do not have a Lion passant or a Assay Office stamp. Do not be confused by the Crown over the letters EP. These letters stand for Electro Plate and the crown is a stamp from the manufacturers and not the Sheffield Assay office.

It is stamped in old english script "W & H S"(Walker & Hall) and then a shield shape with a crown in it and underneath "EP"

Samuel Jacob Silversmith Makers Mark

Samuel Jacob Silversmith was a London maker whose mark was entered in 1892. This mark was stamped on an unusual Silver Card Case hallmarked London 1899. It is offered for sale on ebay through the picture link at the foot of this post. it is described as:

This is a lovely and unsual Antique Victorian Solid Silver Two Pack Playing Card Holder in the form of a Sudan Chair. It is very decorative and each panel has been chased and embossed with intricate foliate scroll repousse work. There are large blank cartouches to the front and sides, so it could be personlaised. It has a domed hined lid which has a pretty embossed flower in the centre and it clips over the base so it stays tightly shut. Inside it has a short dividing bar to separate the two different backed packs of playing cards. Both the little contemporary packs of cards are complete with 52 in each pack and one set has a green back and the other pack a red back. It is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks. Please see my paragraph below regarding additional photographs as I have many more for you to see.Assay Office: LONDON 1899/1900. Just over 2.5 inches long to both ends of the carrying handles. The actual body is 1.75 inches long, just under 1.5 inches wide, and 2 inches tall. The actual playing cards are 1.5 inches tall and 1.25 inches wide. The silver weighs 74g (without the cards). It is in very good condition, with just one very vry minor shallow ding in one of the cartouches, but this is extrememly minor.

Frederick Wich Silver Makers Mark

Frederick Wich Silversmith also known as Frederick Wick was a London Silversmith whose mark was first registered in 1887. The marks you see here are on a leather purse hallmarked in London in the year 1904. You can purchase the purse on ebay through the picture link at the foot of this post. The purse is described as:

This is a beautiful Antique Silver Mounted Purple Leather Purse. This really soft and very tactile leather purse is purple in colour and just oozes quality. It has plain solid silver mounts to the top edges, corners and partway down the sides. Attached to the mounts are a decorative silver wavy squiggly line which gives an extra stylish look. The purse has a lovely silver coloured rope twist chain with a large hallmarked sterling silver ring at the end for carrying. It then has a sliding silver ball which runs up and down the chain to open and close the purse. Open it up to reveal at one end an envelope shaped compartment which has a flap to open. Just behind the flap are three little compartaments, ideal for keeping stamps. To the other side are 3 compartments, 2 being open and then the central one has two silver coloured mounts around the top edges and a little silver clip to clip them together to keep loose chain in. Inside one side is a little flapped compartment with the word "Gold" stamped on it, where a gold coin would be kept.

There are then two loops at one end which houses a silver coloured propelling pencil (which still has lead in it and is in full working order). Slide the pencil out to reveal a little printed booklet which contains a catalogue of stores particpating in a "Vanity Fair" competition. Even this little booklet oozes quality as it has gold coloured edges to the pages.

This lovely purse came in a stiff wooden lidded box which has an Asprey Retailers Label to the lid, but I cannot authenticate if this purse came in the box. Even the box is very well made and has steel edging clips to the corners. As the purse is of such fantastic quality, I have no reason to believe that it did not come with this box, but I cannot confirm Assay Office: LONDON Date: 1904/05 Makers Marks: F.W (Frederick Welch) Dimensions: Just over 4.5 inches wide and just over 3.25 inches tall. It is in lovely condition and it looks as if it has hardly been used. There is a little wear to the outside of the box and one of the steel edging clips I mentioned above is missing from one of the corners to the lid, but this is very very minor

Thomas Latham & Ernest Morton Silver Makers Marks

Thomas Latham & Ernest Morton Silver Makers Marks displayed on this wonderful cruet set offered for sale on ebay. This image clearly shows the letters TL over EM in a circular shield.

This cruet set is described as

Cruet Set In Antique Silver Hallmarks For 1909. This is a Gorgeous Cased Antique Silver Very Large 5 Piece Cruet with 2 Matching Salt Spoons and a Matching Mustard Spoon. Open the lid of the large case to reveal a real WOW factor cruet set. The beautiful silver holders have very pretty scroll pierced sides. Each piece has an overhanging wavy rim which have a gadrooned pattern around the edge and each piece stands on 4 legs with claw shaped feet. Each piece has a shaped blank cartouche so it could be personalised. The two peppers are cylindrical in shape and have domed pull off lids with a decorative finial. The very large oval shaped mustard has a hinged domed lid with the same decorative finial and the two large salts are also oval in shape. Because of their size, the salts could be used to serve sauces, such as horseraddish, cranberry, mint, apple, tartare sauce etc. All the pieces come with blue glass liners. This set also comes complete with its two matching salt spoons and mustard spoon, all having a pretty embossed pattern to the shaped outline and having an embossed terminal (the backs are plain). All the pieces are made from a good guage of silver and all have clear hallmarks. This beautiful set comes complete in its fitted box which has a peach coloured material inside the lid and then the velvet fitted base I can best describe as a mustard colour Assay Office: BIRMINGHAM Date: 1909/10 Makers Marks: TL & EM (Thomas Latham & Ernest Morton)

Mappin & Webb Silver Makers Marks

Mappin & Webb Silver Makers Marks on a Silver Box For Rings Trinkets & Jewellery offered for sale below on ebay just click the picture image at the foot of this post. Here you can see the Mappin & Webb shield surrounding the letters MN WB for this maker.

This is a very pretty and very good Silver Trinket/Ring Box. It is circular in shape with an embossed rim and a raised circular line decoration to the middle and the base. Open up the hinged lid to reveal a gilt lining to the lid and the shallow base compartment is covered with light torquoise velvet to protect those special pieces of jewellery. It stands on 3 feet with what I can best describe as having a fleur de lis shape to the top where they join the body. It is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks. It is also stamped "Mappin & Webb" in gold coloured lettering on the underside of the material covered base. Assay Office: BIRMINGHAM Date: 1924/25 Makers Marks: MN & WB (Mappin & Webb) Dimensions: 2.5 inches in diameter andjust over 1 inch tall. It weighs 78 but this includes the base interior. Condition: It does have a few little shallow dings to the sides and a few to one part of the raised lined pattern. These are all minor and only really noticed on close inpsecation. Remarks: This is a very pretty little trinket/ring box that would look very sweet on any dressing table to store delicate little items of jewellery or rings and also being made by the very collectable makers of Mappin & Webb
